I was on a guided-tour, riding in a mini-van (automatic transmission). Noticed the driver when stopped (due to red signal or traffic) always shifted to neutral. I am wondering why he would do that – to save fuel economy? to ease up on brake pads? just a habit left over from previous manual-shift driving days? Whatever benefit he thought he might have had, it seems like it’s just extra work on the transmission. Just Wondering. Any ideas?? Thanks.

My car has Automatic transmission with Tip-Tronic Sport Shift. If i consistantly put my car on NEUTRAL instead of DRIVE everytime I approach a stop light, will i really save gas? If so can I get a percentage of gas saved based on normal driving. Thanks

I have ’05 Honda (automatic) which I usually shift (drop) to neutral for e.g. while exiting freeway and get back to Drive whenever I want, my understanding is this can save some fuel. Will this damage the engine ? Experts please clarify.
Folks,
Thanks for all replies. But please give me more specific and technical explanation. I appreciate your help….

I have a 2008 Ford Mustang GT manual. I want to know if driving the same speed in 5th gear with lower rpms will save me gas vs driving in 4th gear at higher rpms? Also, does driving in 4th and 5th gear constantly at lower rpms negatively affect my engine in any way?

I’m sure this is one of those questions that there is no “simple” answer, so let me specify. Say I’m just cruising along going around 30, making it so I could put my car (98 ford escort SE, btw) in 3rd or 4th and both would run smoothly. Which saves more gas? I’m pretty mind-numbingly dumb when it comes to cars, so save any BS you’re going to give me. Best answer goes to the person who clarifys it the best.
btw, there is no RPM keeper-tracker, and if you can’t tell by “keeper-tracker”, I know shit about cars.
