According to what I have read (and now what I do)
1. Drive 60mph on interstate roads (unless an emergency).
2. Coast to red lights and keep out of gear when you can. (Tapping the brake pedal keeps brakes from getting hot and waring out faster.)
3. Turn off engine if it is going to be a long red light.
4. Don’t play ‘creepee mouse’. Keep your engine out of gear. as keeping in gear puts strain on it and uses more gas.
5. Don’t make a fast acceleration when light changes to green
as this uses more gas then a gradual acceleration.
(Creepee mouse is moving a little each time car in front of you moves a little while waiting at a stop light)

If you know of a specific truck, I’d really like some ideas on what kind of truck to get! (I want a truck because I don’t like cars.)
-not too hard on the gas.
-won’t be hauling stuff.
-older the better. I like old fashioned trucks.
I’m just worried that the older they get, the more likely I’ll be without an AC and getting stuck. and the less gas conserving they’ll be.

I have been hypermiling for 2.5 weeks now. I drive a sport sedan 2.5 liter 4cyl. My blended EPA for mileage is 27mpg.
My first attempt I got an average of 30mpg for a tank, and on my second I managed a very nice 34.75mpg. I didnt do any of the crazy stuff like drafting trucks or taking wild turns but I have been coasting to stops, using cruise control at lower speeds (47-50) on the highway ect…
Whats your EPA and what is the best you have done? What techniques have you used?

George Carlin’s solution to save gasoline:
The BEST way to save gas to is to deport 11 million illegal immigrants. If you do the math that will be 11 million less people using our gas. Thus, the price of gas comes down.
Bring our troops home from Iraq to guard the border. When they catch an illegal immigrant crossing the border, hand them a canteen, a rifle, and some ammo and ship them to Iraq. Tell him if he wants to come to America then he must serve a tour in the military. Give him fair soldier’s pay while he’s there and tax him on it. After the tour, he will be allowed to become a citizen since he defended the country. He will also be registered to pay taxes and be a legal patriot.
This option will probably deter illegal immigration and provide a solution for the troops in Iraq, as well as the aliens trying to make a better life for themselves.
If they refuse to serve, ship them to Iraq anyway – but without the canteen, the ammo, or the rifle.
Problem solved.

How about a diesel? Doesn’t use ANY gasoline. But there is no best engine for saving gas, since you didn’t spec the application. Is it for a generator? Commuter car? Moving van???? Have to know these things to make a determination. And just saying a tiny 4-cyl is the best is absolutely stupid. How much gas you think it would take for a little carbureted 4-cyl to get a 4000lb vehicle to 60 mph, versus and injected 8-cyl? There is no best engine for everything. Need to know specifics in order to answer this question accurately.
