I am not sure about a gasoline engine? does a gasoline engine spend more gas/ petroleum when it is running free or when it has been forced to stop the car from moving??

if i drive an automatic and see im approaching a red light or other stop or down a large hill…, and I SWITCH FROM DRIVE INTO NEUTRAL –i.e. glide– DOES that save gas???????? Or does the whole action of switching around gears cancel out any gas that may be saved. Also, what about letting up/coasting on the gas pedal when gliding in drive–less gas??
