Now iv always head from a lot of people that Manual is more fuel efficient but isn’t that theory outdated? because automatic cars these days will auto shift gear to gear never making you go above 2k rpm’s when driving normally, as where in a manual car most people shift anywhere from 2-4 rpm’s normally, so isn’t automatic really better at saving fuel?

I have a ’96 Toyota Corolla, and it gets good gas mileage anyways, but I’m looking for any way to save gas with it being near four dollars a gallon (INSANE, but anyways..), I hear that if you use your lower gears while driving in the city and save the overdrive for highway, you can save even more gas. Is this true?

shifting at lower rpms save gas, but does very early shifting (by letting of the pedal) waste more gas? my car wants to shift at 2k rpm. and i let it shift at 1600 rpm, so my feet and pedal at pulsating (letting off to let it shift, pressing down after it shifts). does hauling the car like this waste more gas? source is preferred. thanks
ya, would the constant change in valve opening, actually make it waste more gas? thats what im wondering…

i mean, if my waiting for someone to pick them up and they’ll be done in like five minutes or so, is it better to turn off the engine or leave it running? which saves more fuel and which is better for the engine? i drive an automatic isuzu trooper that runs on diesel.

With an automatic gear box, will fuel be saved by going into neutral when stopped at traffic lights or other stoppage, and then selecting Drive when ready to move off? Will doing this cause any undue wear to the gearbox or anything else?

I have been putting my automatic car into neutral gear while going down hills or before I hit a yellow/red stop light so that I can drift and not waste any gas. It does in fact save gas but a friend of mine told me that he thinks this is damaging your car becauase of the fact that I do not have a clutch. So if it does damage the car then I will not use this method anymore even with the high gas prices!
