Should I move closer to my job, even if the rent is about $150 higher than average, to save on fuel costs?

I currently live about 30 minutes away from my job, and fuel costs are killing me. I was thinking about moving closer to my job to save money on gas, but the rents are expensive! Then what if I switched jobs, and took a job not in that area? I’d be back where I started, but with higher rent…
Carpooling is out, since I like to work out at my job after work, and I work late hours sometimes. I am open to public transportation, but the bus system here is a joke, with very limited routes.
I drive a 2005 Honda Civic coupe, four cylinder, so I get pretty good gas mileage, about 27 mi city/38 hwy (I’ve actually calculated myself).

Is car pooling an option for you? What about public transportation? Is that an option?

Cost it out – is public transport an option when you move closer? Can you ride your bike in? What other difficulties would you have? If the positives of living closer outweigh the negatives the finanaces balance, then do it.

Are you spending more than that on fuel? Remember, when you rent, you will be locked in to paying that money, regardless of what fuel costs do.

You might be better off to stay where you are, and look into cheaper forms of commuting. (ie. carpooling, or getting a more efficient vehicle)

its not only the fuel is the wear and tear of the car ex. tires, brakes etc that you will be saving on

How about driving a car that doesn’t use gasoline at all? Honda makes the Civic GX, which runs on natural gas (methane). Very cheap to fill up and cleaner for the environment, too. I have 2 Fords that run on it, and it’s $10 to fill up in Utah. Check out my source below and see if it would work for you…
