Should the government increase taxes as a means of conserving energy?

I think the federal gas tax should be increased in part to promote conservation. The other reason I think it needs to be upped by 25-50 cents is because it would allow the government to soften prices in case of a spike by giving slack on the tax. It would soften the economic impact of spikes and bumps.
The only way that adding tax to fuel is going to save energy is if the $$ from those taxes is spent building an alternative fuel infrastructure, like a network of fuel stations.
That isn’t likely because many of the politicians have been purchased, I mean lobbied by the big oil companies.
Oh, and fuel prices don’t have anything to do with supply and demand. Take a look at the Fortune list, especially the top 10. Look at how much their profit and loss statements. It’s crazy!
Biofuel, that’s the way to go. I’m going to go plant some corn so I’m ready!!
