Lose some weight! We all weigh about 24 more pounds per person than we did in the 1970s. That weight, when we’re driving, has to be moved around with our cars. If we could lose those 24 lbs. and reach 1970s sizes, America would used nearly one billion gallons of gas less than we currently do.

When you start after a traffic light turns green, don’t mash the gas. Just push it gently and then stronger as you gain speed.
Also, don’t use the drive through window. Park the car and get your butt out to go into the bank or restaurant.
Accelerate slowly, ride in the highest gear possible. Avoid using the AC when possible. Open the windows when under 45 instead of using the AC. Keep the tires properly inflated, alignment in check and the body free from any major dents. Keep the car well maintained with oil changes, proper tune ups and fresh filters. Every little thing helps a small amount. Depending on what shape your car is in now, and what your driving, you could get as much a 5mpg more.
Turn the engine off when you are stuck in a traffic jam.
Make sure your tyres are properly inflated.
Ensure your air filter is clean.
Or you could buy a prius.
