Running my ’95 BMW 540i 6-speed at low rpms…. Good or bad idea?
I bought this car less than a week ago, and at $3.60/gallon for premium, I haven’t been stomping on it too much despite the 300+hp with a Dinan chip. I’ve been running it at very low rpms (2k) in higher gears to save fuel, especially around town. Is this going to prematurely ware out the engine/tranny?

No.
Low RPMs is actually better for the engine… provided you also keep off the gas. Low RPM and full throttle is bad for the engine–worse than high RPMs and light throttle.
Really, you shouldn’t worry about gas. Premium is almost $5/gal here and I just bought a 300HP F-150 4×4. Of course, my commute is very short.
No it wont hurt it. However, the other guy say stuff about low RPMs at high throttle and high RMPs at low throttle is seriously confused. RPM, or Revolutions Per Minute are directly related to the throttle. If you push on the throttle the RPMs increase. So what ever he is saying is gibberish.
Actually the first guy is right – if you are, say at 2000 RPM in 4th and you stomp the gas it is going to bog down – the fuel can’t burn off fast enough because the gear ratio won’t allow the RPMs to climb fast enough.
That said you are fine at low rpm but shift down if you need to speed up
