if your turn your car of when its still moving and still in drive, so that when you are about to reach your destination you no longer have the engine on. Would this save any gas in the long run?
and would this damage the engine in any way?

could harm the transmission if its an automatic. but your really only probally saving like a gallon a year doing that. not worth it.

If you switch your engine off whilst in gear the car would not freewheel very far as the wheels would be turning the engine and acting like a brake. So you would need to be in neutral gear.

Read this next bit, it is important

Turning of the engine also turns off your power steering, your power brakes, oil pumps for the trans and if you turn the key too far the steering lock will engage. So, you will be in a car with no brakes or steering.
It would be a pretty silly thing to do,….yes?

Your gas savings wouldn’t be significant that way. Your best bet is to keep your tires properly-inflated, keep your air filter clean, and accelerate gently.

Very bad idea, the torque converter is only designed to transmit power one way, from the engine to the transmission. You risk ruining your torque converter and your transmission. Not to mention that your power steering and power brakes wont work without the engine on so you will have virtually no control over your car.

It will not save a significant amount of fuel.
It will cause loss of power for steering and brakes – possibly causing an accident, and for that reason it is illegal.
It will cause increased wear and likely damage to the transmission.
It will not damage the engine.

There is no magic bolt on or mysterious fuel additive which will improve your vehicles fuel economy but keeping your tires properly inflated and checking to make sure that your brakes do not drag are important checks to make.

For far more effective methods to save fuel – without risking damage to your vehicle go to:

By following the driving techniques they recommend I have increased the fuel economy of my 2000 F-250 Super Crew Pick Up Truck from between 12 to 13 MPG average to over 18 MPG average – calculated over multiple tank fillings and distances over 1000 miles! I performed no mechanical modifications beyound making certain the tires were properly inflated, and I am using the same fuel source as I was before I started practicing hypermiling driving techniques. That is a whopping almost 50% improvement in fuel economy simply by changing how I drive!!! And I thought I was a good driver before … well good maybe but certainly not an efficient one… Theoretically I can get over 22 mpg but I do too much city driving where even the most careful planning is ruined all to often by traffic lights and traffic conflicts but safety comes first and sometimes you simply have to use the brake and throw away some fuel!
