It’s a bunch of hogwash, as you say! Whoever told you that is a Jatropha fruit-cake! What in the name of god is a Jatropha fruit?
Maybe it will power a zero-point energy or an anti-matter propulsion engine in a hundred years — internal combustion engine? — no chance.
There are many plants that can provide fuel for vehicles. The Jatropha bean can be squeezed and the juice used straight as it is (no refining). Castor oil (from beans) has been used as fuel for airplanes in WW2 (ever smell that strange smell from model airplanes? Castor oil). Switch grass squeezings were used to power the first diesel engines over 100 years ago. Then there are the numerous plants that can be distilled into alcohol. Germany used gasifier plants that turned firewood or coal into a gas that could be burned to power internal combustion engines (gasoline engines). They attached to the back bumper and looked like a 55 gallon drum.
