New Mexico has declared a state of emergency and asked us to turn down our thermostats to conserve, would you?

Our governor just declared a state of emergency for the state of New Mexico. The cause is a supply shortage of natural gas. They also asked us to turn off all non-essential appliances, and to turn our thermostats down by 10 degrees. Apparently there is an electricity shortage too.

They are shutting down all the public schools, universities, and most state buildings tomorrow in an effort to conserve gas.

I turned down my central gas heater to 60, but I’ve got an electric space heater that I’m using to keep my bedroom warm (a toasty 64F). Yeah, I’ve also got my laptop on…

What if the world hits a supply disruption like this? Many things could trigger a shortage in gasoline or natural gas. How would people react?

Hopefully this resolves itself by the end of the weekend.

no i would demand the government allow more oil well drilling so we would have enough energy

I have just turned mine down to 85 degrees to help them out.

Well, yeah. During the rolling blackouts here yesterday, the price of a megawatt hour went from $50 to $2000. I’d rather wrap myself in a blanket than pay out the bum for electricity due to increased demand.

To answer your second question, people would freak out and start stealing stuff. But I assume the worst of people…

That should really piss you off, considering that we have 100′s of years of usable natural gas right here in the U.S. that we’re NOT allowed to go after. eh?

tonalc2 @ 2:53 am #

Of course I would. I’m guessing you’ve never had rolling blackouts before.

I hope that doesn’t happen where I’m at!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We really need to quit thinking about fuel efficient cars and start looking at homes. A main pip under our house just froze and busted because of the gas going out. It will cost us thousands to fix. Is NMGC going to pay for all the homes that this is happening to and all the children that are freezing in negative degree weather. They have to turn off gas at every single house before they can get gas into the main pipes anyway so it will be awhile. … So i guess my answer is no i wouldnt. We should all have to freeze unless your forced to because it will be pretty upsetting if you turn it down and are cold, and then you gas goes out also.

Stay warm!
