do a compression test on the engine. if compression is bad all the power is being lost( gas wasted) but 20 MPG is not unheard of for a car that old. i.e. old technology

did you check your o2′s?

What kind of driving are you doing, City Hwy, and do you have a lead foot. You are getting 20 mpg. I have a 93 Infinity and I do both city and hwy and the best I have gotten is 26mpg and the car runs great.

Some tips for help with mileage:

keep your tire pressure as high as your owners manual allows.

drive carefully. accelerate slowly.

when you see a stop (red light, etc) ahead of you, immediately take your foot off the gas and coast to the stop, braking gently as needed. This is particularly important for hybrids as the regenerative braking works only under gentle braking.

no roof rack

keep the car maintained properly.

If your owners manual says premium fuel required, use it.

on the open highway, drive as slowly as your patience allows. I found that shifting from 75 to 65 increased my mileage by 20%.

Use cruise control. Steady speed helps mileage.

Do not idle. let the car warm only for 30 seconds before driving off. If you are going to be stopped at a long light, shut the engine off.

Don’t carry around a lot of useless junk in the trunk of the car.

Avoid long lines at drive-through windows. You’ll save money by going inside.

And the biggest one: don’t drive.

The car is probably losing compression. Its easy to check if you bring it to a shop. If thats the problem new rings should fix it, or it could be furthor problems which are unlikely. Good luck.

Well, the car is about 17 years old and you are going to loose some
gas mileage over this much time. It may sound like nothing but,

1. Keep proper tire inflation . I keep mine at max for the car.
2. Clean out the trunk ( If you travel with extra ” stuff” )
3. I won’t mention good driving habits. ( I’m sure you know them )
4. Lower your idle if your engine can handle the drop.
5. Is the alignment nice and straight.

Just some thoughts here.
Good Luck and praise the drop in fuel while it lasts..
