Does this save gas: maybe
Will it hurt your car: no.
I’m a hardcore hypermiler, I get over 35mpg out of a 20-yr-old Toyota pickup. I’ll turn the engine off and coast down hills, turn off and coast to lights, accelerate slowly, observe traffic far in advance, etc. You can get great mileage if you have more realistic expectations. You can realize big gains right now if you’ll just leave for your commute a little earlier, and drive a little slower. The difference in mileage at 55mph and 65mph is tremendous.
I do the same thing all the time. It not only saves gas, but reduces engine strain when going downhill with your foot off the gas pedal, especially with a manual. I don’t think it would damage anything. I’ve never heard of anyone having a problem related to this.
Coasting is illegal, you can get a ticket in most states for doing it if you get caught. The reason for this is that it is dangerous. You need to be in control of your car at all times.
You can save fuel by accelerating gently, and driving slower. Keep your tires properly inflated, and don’t lug around heavy stuff in your trunk if you don’t need to. Keeping your car tuned-up goes without saying…
tes it saves gas, and yes its dangerous, you can mess up your tranny when you shift back into gear, and you cant control your speed as well, i only do it in my junker
you don,t save a bit of gas. your engine is still running. all your doing is wearing out the brakes.
A) no. in a way your actually using a lil bit more.
now a days cars with computer controlled fuel injection helps you save gas.
like honda, nissan to name a couple.
when you come to a hill going downward and you let go of the gas while still in gear the engines computer will cut off the fuel injectors till it gets to a certain rpm range.
while doing this your also using what is called engine braking which is also easier on the brakes because they don’t have to work as hard to stop the car.
That is a great way to save gas! I actually have written on article other ways to save gas. They are small things that everyone can do that add up!
