Is the following a good deal from a New Car dealership, or just a gimmick?
I buy a new Chevy which get mileage of 28 mpg for $18,000 plus the trade-in of my old Ford which gets 22 mpg. Then when I buy gasoline for the next 3 years, maximum of 12,000 miles a year, they’ll reimburse me for any price over $2.99 a gallon.
For example if I pay $3.99/gal for 20 gallons of petrol, they’ll write me out a check for $20 every time.
So if I drive the 12K a year, how much will I save on gas if it stays around $4?

I think they hired a bunch of bean counters smarter than me. Big business versus one person. This is America, one person loses every time nowadays.
well if gas costs you $4 a gallon, and you drive 12,000 miles a year getting 28mpg….
12,000/28 = ~430 gallons of gas
430 gallons x $4 = $1720
430 gallons x $2.99 = ~1286
So you’ll save approx. $434/yr.
Your old car got 22mpg. so thats
12,000/22 = ~545 gallons
545 x $4 = $2180
so thats about $900 more than if you get your gas for $2.99 a gallon from Chevy.
Problem is, buying a new car = new car payments. Those payments mean more money out of pocket anyways, more than you save on gas. Keeping your old Ford would cost you less in the long run because (assuming you paid it off) you wouldn’t have a car payment, leaving money you use now on a car payment, for gas. So was it worth trading your car in for an extra 6 mpg and $2.99 gas deal? Probably not, unless of course your old car was starting to break down. If the old car was fine though, i would’ve just kept it. The $2.99 gas thing is a gimmic, they got more out of you in the price of the car, (no rebates) and also i wouldn’t trust GM, they aren’t exactly rolling in $$$ these days.
There are NO good deals to ownin & operatin ANY cars since 1985! Period, enuff said.

They don’t write you a check. They issue you a card, which you use for 12,000 miles per year times 3 years. You pay for the gas you have bought on the card at the rate of $2.99 per gallon, and they pay the rest.
It is merely another way to sell cars, and isn’t any different than their “rebate” or “zero interest” they have offered in the past.
