Is it true that there are certain cars that can go from 8 cylinders to 4 cylinders to save gas?
I’ve heard a rumor that there are certain cars that can go from 8 cyl to 4 cyl to save gas. Is this true? What is this feature called? And if so, which cars come with it?

yes ther is
Overdrive
yea
i kno for a fact the new Chevy Impala SS has that feature
actually the gmc yukon is one of them…
yup..
Why yes, we have a impala SS, it goes from 8 to 4 cylinders to save gas, Floor it and hold on as all 8 fire up…. Cruise on the highway and only 4 are on saving gas.
-Yes it is true.
-GM has some models
-Malibu
-Monte Carlo-2006
-Some Cadillac models not sure of which ones.
yes i know bmw has 6 to 4 cylinder convert.
Yes. GM uses variable-displacement in the V-8 versions of Envoy XL and the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Mercedes-Benz in the S500, Honda in the Odyssey and the Accord Hybrid, and Chrysler in V-8 Hemi iterations of the Chrysler 300, the Dodge Magnum RT, and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
yes a cadillac it has not been a big item
but cadillac made it during the last gas crunch
hope this helps
08-09 rams have it. they call it MDS(Multiple-Displacement System)
Yes it is true. It was actually done quite a while ago as well. In the mid 80′s, Cadillac had what some called the 4/6/8. It would shut off various cylinders to aid in Fuel Mileage. It had a digital guage on the dash that you could see how many were running. It didnt work that well, it mainly stayed in 8, on the highway around 60mph it would occasionally switch to 6, NEVER saw 4. It wasn’t very successful. The newer versions are supposed to be pretty good although i’ve never driven one.
Lazyinvt…
those were the 82 Cadillac V-8-6-4 models. they sucked and it was early technology.
yes… however if you read a lot of reviews, every company that makes them has seen issues with them. and all the issues are the same. after a few to 50k miles, the transition is no longer ‘seamless’ and it starts to feel like you are having transmission problems. i know a number of people who have them that are looking for a way to shut it off b/c it’s so annoying (GM, Dodge, Honda all have people saying that)
i have it in my 300c and it doesn’t save gas! Only thing good about it was I didn’t have to pay gas guzzling tax like I would have had I bought the srt8 model. Agreed does feel like tranny problems now that i am passed 50k but chrysler does an excellent job servicing this car as it is my first chrysler I have ever owned! traded in my cadillac dts for this and I love it! Cadillac was nice but I am tired of GM’s warranty games!
