Is it true that braking shorter and accelerating slower save gas milage?
My older sister told me a while back that if I accelerate the car faster and slow down much further back from the light (i.e. don’t brake until the last possible moment and coming to a stop that way), it wastes gas, and I was wondering how much truth there was to that. Does it make a difference, and if so how much?

The more you have to brake, the more gas you are wasting. If you see the light down the street turn red, try to drive at a speed where you don’t have to stop, most gas is used when you accellerate from a dead stop. Accellerating quickly wastes gas. Slow accellerations require less RPM of the engine, saving fuel.
Speeding is also a waste of fuel. I am tired of seeing idiots driving their SUVs 85mph and complaining about gas prices. it is their own fault. 70mph really is the top of the efficient range for most passenger vehicles. Any faster, you are just pushing air.
Your sister is right! Following her adivce could save you 10 to 15% on gas and a lot in repairs to your car. She’s right on this one!
accelerating slower will save gas, b/c if u speed up quick from stop it burns more. the whole stopping thing i am not sure. i usually just let go the accelerator if i know i have to stop soon so i just kinda let it slow down by it self then i gently apply the brake to stop it a little quicker
yes, driving style GREATLY effect how much gas is used in the driving process. There is a group of people called Hyper milers, they drive so efficiently, that they get over 100MPG on a Prius.
However, those are the extremes, you’ll probably be likely to save around 20-40% on your gas, so driving style do greatly effect your fuel efficiency.
That might be a little different though if you have a CVS the continuously variable shift since you are already driving very efficiently, so you’ll probably save less.
driving habits do affect gas milage. the harder you accelerate the more gas you are using. i don’t know about wasting it. the braking doesn’t really have too much to do with fuel economy, but accelerating would. if you filled your tank twice, once accelerated heavily throughout use of that tank, and next accelerated lightly throughout use of the other tank you would get better mileage out of the second tank.
