Is it ok to put regular unleaded gas in a Mercedes?

7

I have a 1999 Mercedes E Class that has 115,000 miles on it and mechanically, it runs perfectly. With the recent rise in gas prices, I am wondering if it would be bad for the engine to use lower grade gas to save a little bit of money.
If yes, are there any negative side effects to using the lower grade fuel?

The car is ten years old almost, just use 87.

The octane rating is such…ITs the gasolines ability to resist knock…
with that said,.I would go with what the manufacturers recommendations are…period.
If it recommends the car can use 87 then so be it.
Otherwise IMO use the rated octane…
Knocking for a period of time can cause engine damage.

The grade of gasoline you use depends on the motor, not the age of the car or the kind of car. If your owners manual says you need premimum you might be able to get away with 89 octane. The worst that could happen is you damage your knock sensor and then the car won’t have any power. They are pretty cheap to replace though. If the manual doesn’t call for premimum then don’t use it, its just a waste of money.

i’ll keep this simple, no if it’s fuel injected, yes if it has a carborator. So if it’s old yes, newer, say within 10 years please only use plus rated gasoline . It would be impossiable for it to need high performance gasoline inless it’s fuel injected thus being somewhat new.

empty your tank and try like 3 or four gallons, and start it up in the morning when it’s cold. If you hear a knock then just go back to what you have. It’s not worth saving $2 bucks every time you fill up ($60+?) if you’re going to have to get a $800 valve job later on.

Running regular in this engine will cause the ignition timing to retard under load .Drive gently and you will be fine drive hard and regular fuel will make less power and most likely use more fuel .Do a mileage check and see. In time you may get a check engine light .It would be intresting to see what codes come up.
