Is it fine if I hold the clutch downhill?

11

when driving down hill, some times there is enough slope to give you the speed u need without a need to use the acclerator.
So my point is, during downhill, do i Save fuel if i hold the clutch and drive or is it good if i just leave the clutch and glide without pressing the accelerator too. (the engine is running its not off).

brainy people answer.lol
thanks

you do loose some of the control of the vehicle when you push the clutch in. my self i use engine compression to slow the vehicle down, the computer will automatically adjust fuel mixture to a decreased amount. i know that it can be fun to go racing down hill like that but use logic to our advantage and down shift to stay alive.

By depressing your clutch you may save a small amount of fuel depending on which gear is used, but you may be using your brakes to control the speed? With the clutch out or engaged your using the engine to control the speed and you’ll save your brakes.

No its not a very good idea any excessive use of the clutch will wear it out. instead just shift the car into neutral. and at the bottom shift back into the appropriate gear for the speed that you are going (The clutch separates the engine from the transmission so its not a terrible idea but not the best). Also putting the car into neutral on down hills will help save gas the more you do it.

that works, but it will burn out parts of your clutch that are expensive to repair. i live near a lot of hills and bridges and drive a stick. put it in neutral and coast down, when you start to lose speed shift into the gear that is best for how fast your going. neutral will save you gas, the clutch thing will kill your clutch system.

There’s really no reason to hold to clutch downunless you just like doing it,i’ve done it many time’s myself, you should don’t want to let off of the clutch while your going down hill are you could screw the tranny up big time’s ,if your not going the right speed when you let off the clutch,so if your going to be doing this just be careful not to screw anything up.

Yes it is ok or even put it in neutral..The only down side is you’ll need to use the brakes more so you don’t go to fast..If you use the brakes too much they could overheat and not work,so be careful!!!

There are some cars that shut of the fuel while decelerating (in gear) which save fuel .

Use lower gear during downhill to avoid holding down your clutch too much plus its much safer, not much difference on gas consumption when stepping or not stepping on the accelerator

First of all check Your drivers hand book. (1) It’s illegal to coast down hill with the transmission out of gear or disengaged by holding the clutch pedal down. That should cover both automatic and manual type transmissions. (2) It is dangerous as all get out “that stops me from swearing, I hope” and besides that is just plain dumb. Remember this, the faster an object is moving the more power or energy it takes to stop it. and brakes can wear out in a hurry if they are abused as in the sample you put forth. The engine acts as a MECHANICAL BRAKE when your vehicle is going down a grade or hill also it is very prudent if your car has an automatic trans. to disengage the overdrive if so equipped. Move the selector from (D) to D or D2 or 2. If your car is equipped with a manual transmission then I would drop 2 speeds down from a 5-6 speed or 1 speed down in a 3-4 speed. Remember this the fuel that your vehicle will use going down hill will be so minimal compared to the rest of your driving it’s not evan funny. This reminds me of the guy who pulls up to a red traffic light and shuts off his engine and waits for the light to turn green thinking that “The engine is off so I’m saving money.” Hah Hah the process of starting the car engine consumes almost twice as much as the engine would use while waiting for the light to change. A person is better adjusting their speed between lights so the lights change as they approch.

You probably haven’t been driving a standard for very long, huh? I used to do that when I first started but after some time it just becomes too much of a hassle when you’re on the highway or whatnot. If you’re on the highway you should be in your highest gear and at that point the gear ratio is very low (usually something like 1:1) and not consuming a whole lot of gas anyways. It’s also good to keep the car in gear to keep yourself from speeding -too much-. You can really pick up speed on some hills when you’re in neutral and that’s just asking for a ticket. The most common places I see cops are at the bottom of hills, around curves on the highway, and in the medians behind concrete barriers and support beams for bridges. So save yourself a speeding ticket and wasted effort and just leave the car in gear.

.No need for brainy people to answer , just someone w/half a brain. Just SIMPLY put it in neutral, and cost,no gas is used when doing this., holding in clutch when not needed will shorten it’s life.

why would you want to?
also, this will help speed up the wear of the throw out bearing.
the less you have the clutch pushed in the longer the throw out bearing lasts.
