Your Camry should be just fine as long as it’s running properly.

To be even more efficient do a little preventive maintenance on the car and give it the attention it needs to keep it running good.

On such a short trip it really won’t matter what car you drive back and forth from a fuel mileage perspective.

– At 8 miles round trip a day, 5 days a week, a tank of fuel would probably last you over a month no matter what car you drive.

– All cars get poor mileage if driven on very short trips, mostly because nothing in the engine (the engine or the fluids) has a chance to get warm.

For a car the Camry is fairly good for fuel efficiency but don’t figure on great mileage if it is stop and go traffic. If you get stop and go mileage at 16 miles per gallon then you would use 1/2 gallon per day which would be close to $1.75 if not more plus insurance, repairs, oil changes, etc. But the advantage is if you plan to use the vehicle for other purposes as well. A Camry is a good multi purpose vehicle.

If you want better efficiency a small scooter would be even better. Some get over 100 miles per gallon. The old mopeds (the ones with pedals to start out by pedaling) could get as much as 120 miles per gallon. One guy here fixed a weed whacker motor to his bicycle and claims to achieve 200 miles per gallon. Note that you wouldn’t be able to go faster than some 25 mph on these vehicles.

You could try to buy a hybrid or an electric vehicle but that would be very expensive and most likely wouldn’t justify the mileage. An electric scooter would be the most economical although could still have high initial costs.

A bicycle would be the cheapest to use. 4 miles one way isn’t too far for most people although it would take longer than other forms of transportation.

Another idea would be to carpool. Maybe you could take your Camry and add 3 passengers that help with gas equally. That would reduce your fuel costs by 3/4.
