In this age of gas exceeding $3 a gallon, why are NASCAR races still going on?
Admittedly, I am not a fan of auto racing, but still it seems to me that it’s not a good example to have these events with their displays of wastefulness of fossil fuels when the rest of us are expected to conserve gas and energy.

Because they can afford to pay that and a lot more!
They don’t burn gasoline; they burn alcohol. Alcohol is not a fossil fuel, so prices at the gas pump have nothing to do with it.
boo hoo! who cares they’re paying for their own gas!!
i ask myself the same question, personally i think the sport is pretty boring, but that’s not the question. i really believe it is a waste, running 500 laps around a circle , refilling over and over for each car, i’m sure id adds up :. maybe they could shorten the races or something for a start?
All of those sponsors have to dump their money somewhere. I do believe that some of the sponsors are gas companies. I think I have seen a Mobilrace car before.
Because Rednecks pay to watch it.
OK.. they don’t have to be rednecks… but it helps.
advertisers
Because they make far more money to care what people think about their gas comsumption.
racing fuel is a whole lot more expensive than gasoline
I agree. F-ing rednecks.
To entertain the dumb, inbred, rednecks.
You don’t want to know what will happen if they don’t have their fix of 3 hours of left turns.
i mean i so agree with u i mean those people is just wasting gas and the oil prices is like going up each day those kind of event is not even fun and it harm ful too can’t they save those gas they use on the races for us people who r always needing them
ok so what about golf, all these green fields being watered in places that have water restrictions
I agree. did you know that if every person in the united states stopped driving for ONE day, we would save 3 million dollars? I think they should have one day a year that no one can drive.
Racing helps develop more fuel conservation.
That’s funny, I never really thought about that! you would think they would have come up with a car that didnt use gas. (Or have they?? I don’t watch Nascar)
I wonder how much it costs in gas to complete a nascar race…. hmm. I think questions within questions are illegal. I’m sorry.
Ha, I was wondering the same thing!!! I don’t watch Nascar and I honestly don’t care for it but Nascar is a large “Cash Cow”. They get money for wearing a logo like, say, Target or some major corporation. The more people who watch it and place bets on the races, the more gas we use.
That’s why I do not get why people don’t believe it’s up to us to save our planet!!!
During the gas shortages in the early 1970s, that was the same refrain by many people, including media members. The cars do not run on gasoline used in passenger vehicles and – within the big picture – the gas used by the team haulers, etc. are not forcing gas prices to rise to these record levels.
NASCAR in general, brings more beneficial effect to the economy of this nation than does the fuel usage bring deficit. For example; all of the sponsors who advertise using NASCAR make a great deal more revenue because of the advertising. If the company is making more revenue then by extension employees are getting more work, and by extension, the employees are making more money therefore they can do more shopping at other various businesses which gives other peoples employees more work and more money and so on and so forth… Further since the sponsors are able to use NASCAR for advertising it allows them to stay in business so that you, I, and all of the other lucky people (who at this moment are being graced with the presence of all my great intellect) can purchase from these companies all of those goods and services, that willing sellers want to sell and willing buyers want to buy. 90% of the fuel saving technology on all of the vehicles on the road today are due to the NASCAR engineers, not to mention so many of those life-saving devices which you will find inside your own vehicle that help keep you alive so that you can sit down at your computer and ask these assanine questions that you seem to love to ask.
Because $3/gallon is cheap compared to most of the world.
Plus what would you low self esteem elitists whine about if you didn’t have NASCAR to make yourself feel superior.
Think about this. A baseball game, attended by, let’s just say, 10,000 people (probably a low number). Each person uses 3 gallons of gas to get there and back. Thats 30,000 gallons. Not including fuel used by maintaince, the teams and such.
NASCAR is the just anouther excuse for wasting fuel. It isn’t the only one.
Because we don’t get our gas from a national petrol reserve. It’s simple supply and demand. The gas is purchased by private companies from private companies. It has nothing to do with you or me, and there is no shortage of gasoline. The prices are initially set by oil cartels (i.e. OPEC) through supply control and price fixing. There is little that W, Congress, or you can do about it, except for punishing American oil companies, which only further hurts domestic product. Maintaining healthy relationships with oil-rich Middle Eastern countries is the only immediate way we can save ourselves from depression, which we’re trying to do. Shutting down NASCAR will solve none of our problems.
It’s not that gas is scarce (not yet), just expensive.
They can afford it. Their teams are well funded and sponsored. I also found out form a friend that racing fuel is a lot more than $3 a gallon.
Ah yes…the prime example of a capitalist economy, the basis of which is that unlimited profit is made by what people choose to put their money into, with little to no government control. Which means as long as an outfit like NASCAR proves profitable, it won’t matter how high gas prices go, it will still exist as long as people are willing to put the money into it.
Most people would agree that the profession of a teacher or policeman is more valuable to a society as a whole than being a NASCAR driver, yet it’s the drivers who get hundreds or thousands of times more money than either teachers or police. Why? Simply because people are willing to pay a lot more for NASCAR entertainment than for police or teachers.
The only time that NASCAR races will stop is when resources become so scarce that the government will have no choice but to control all the distribution of wealth in a more equitable manner, reverting back to socialism.
Virtually all race cars run on methanol nowadays,so that does not impact supply. The number of all racing cars in the entire world, even if run on pure gasoline,is so low that they wouldn’t really make a difference.Check out Audi…they have a diesel racer, and it’s very competitive. There are also electric drag cars now,and they are very fast, and getting faster.
