In the late 70′s and early 80′s VW made a very fuel effcient truck based on a car frame.?
My question is why do companies discontinue making products that people buy and there is a demand for? I understand if sales slipped and they discontinued for a few years, but the truck from what research I’ve done got about 45 MPG. Surely with advanced technology they could make one at least that fuel efficient if not more and I’m sure they would have people pounding at the door for it. Not only for saving $$$ at the pump but for environmental reasons.

The VW pickup wasn’t that popular in the States.
There was also the Dodge Ram50 (Mitsubishi), the Mazda B series trucks, the Toyotas……(this is the time the began to built their reputation for reliability). There were a couple more Japanese names, too.
It was a market where they only had a small share.
Like any business that wants to stay in business, they dropped what didn’t sell well and concentrated on what did.
There still isn’t any demand for them.
The current small trucks are built bigger than they were for a reason.
Usability.
Small bed with a load rating equal to a car. It’s either not a large enough area, or it’s overloaded.
Even with the last two generations of “SUVs”, I don’t see the El Camino or Ranchero coming back.
