In Order To Conserve On My Gas Bill, I Shut Off Any Vents In My House In Rooms I Am Not Using.?
But, the thermostat is in the dining room , which I don’t use too often. Now, if I close off the vent in the dining room, is that a good idea? Will it lower the heat, or raise the thermostat?

I would reduce the opening on rooms that have doors but don’t close totally leave them cracked a little and that would allow some heat but give more heat to areas needed like the dining room that has the thermostat which would heat up faster and shut down the furnace sooner ,but if you shut off the others altogether your interior walls will get cold and that can start a condensation problem because those walls are not protected with a moister barrier .best thing to do is turn down a bit and wear more clothing and slippers .
Only close the vents to rooms that have doors that you can also close. Closing the vent in the dining room will only cause the heater to run longer since the thermostat has to read the temperature in the room where it is located.
I moved my thermostat from the hallway into the living room and installed a door to the hallway leading to 2 bedrooms that I don’t use. I closed the vents to those rooms and shut the doors.
I use a space heater like when I’m on the computer. No sense in heating the whole house if I’m in one area.
Shutting off the vent in the dining room will actually cause your furnace to run more. Since you won’t be heating the room as rapidly, it will run longer before it heats the dining room space up to turn the thermostat off. You are better of selectively shutting vents but by trying to maintain even heat throughout the house. The most effective way to conserve on your gas bill is to turn the thermostat down to the lowest level you can tolerate and wear layered clothing still.
Thank you from all of us in the HVAC industry.
Closing off registers is a major cause of heat exchanger and limit switch failures.
Both of these bring in profits to us.
Save a couple bucks on the gas bill and pay us hundreds to correct the problems you have caused.
But then I could be wrong, I’ve only spent the last 36 years in the industry.
Your heater will run until the temperature is reached that is set on the thermostat. If you close off the register in that room the heater will run longer.
