If your car had only half a gallon of gas,?
would you drive more slowly to conserve what little you have, or drive faster so that when it did run out of fuel you would coast farther?

Drive at about 45 MPG. That is when the car goes into top gear and it is the BEST MPG.
Use cruise control – it also maximizes the MPG.
good Luck…
funny thing is i drive faster when im low…hurry to gas station…lol
slower will get you farther (so long as you are in top gear).
Car manufacturers have it so that the car has 3 or 4 gallons left when the fuel indicator hits empty. Thus, if I only had half a gallon left, I would be hitting myself so hard, realizing that I’ll have to spend hundreds of dollars on repair (pump can be damaged when it runs out of fuel, and also if you got any gunk from a fuel station, it’ll be sucked into your engine if you reach the bottom).
If, on the other case, it was 1/2 gallon to hitting empty (e.g., 4.5 gallons left), I would try to drive in a way that would maximize fuel economy. For my car, it is around 65 mph (it’s drag coefficient is lower than even an Acura NSX).
Driving slower might not be conserving fuel. You want to conserve fuel by maximizing your fuel economy, which is driving at a vehicle’s most efficient speed, using cruise control, and minimizing braking/accelerating.
Although, I might consider using the time to call AAA and using the 1/2 gallon to keep the A/C running. lol
it could drive you ten to 15 kilometers or so.if you find this enough to reach the gas station then go for it. but it would be better to stop the engine and find those fuel container and fill her up. so you might not be ending with a dry carburetor or injection pump.
