I want to save on gas (click here to read more)?

6

I am currently driving an automatic.

Sometimes, when going down a hill I will shift the stick into neutral so that the engine is not running.

Will this hurt my transmission ?

Thanks

No it will not hurt it. Shifting it back into gear may hurt the converter a bit.

No it shouldn’t.
I do it too but i try to be going around 40mph before putting it back into gear just so the converter isn’t having to much force put on it. I don’t know for other states but i guess it is illegal to do this in california. O well when gas is over $4 i really don’t care.

I presume you mean the engine is idle not turned off I hope! idle may be a little rough on the trans but not enough to stress. it is illegal though so watch those down hill speeds.

It depends on what kind of transmission and what kind of car, I am a service manager for a Chrysler dealership. If your transmissions main shaft turns with your torque converter the first gear and reverse gear is still turning and without the car running the transmission fluid is not cooling inside the transmission because it is not being pumped thought the transmission cooler, basically, it can cook the transmission after a length of time.

No, but the lack of engine braking will cause you to use your service brakes more…

They in turn wear out faster, and there goes the $.10 saved in fuel.

What you really need to start doing is become a proficient Hypermiler. And also, I bet it’s been awhile since you last changed your airfilter…

Just by doing a simple thing as that will squeeze a lot more gas out of each gallon you put in! :-)
