Use the OD button. It allows the highest gear in the transmission to be used. So you have good economy, not so good towing power.
Read your owner’s manual for when to turn it off. Probably rarely except when towing stuff.
The OD button on automatics is for a power boost without losing revs i.e. when you come to a hill at say 100 km/hr (=60m.p.h.) and the engine starts to lose revs you flick the OD button (best at around 3000 revs in my car) and then the engine will pick up the revs in the next speed range and your speed will not drop suddenly – which can be dangerous for following traffic. Even more useful if towing at the time of course. Yes uses more gas – even a lot more (of course!)Cheers.
Look closely at your owners manual. It should give you a clue..
The dealer told my wife it was OK to drive her 2004 Buick entirely in OD, and with 50K miles on the clock there has been no problem. On the other hand I used OD for all ordinary driving on my 1984 GMC S-15. It blew the overdrive, but all other gears were OK. The guy at the tranny repair shop said the OD was for speeds over 45 MPH
Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES tow anything in OD. Your owners manual should specifically prohibit this.
keep overdrive on at all times for normal driving. overdrive is kind of like extra gears it will save you gas and keep your rpms down if you on the hwy goin 60mph with od on push the button and notice your rpms go up. high rpms=lots of gas
dont tow with it on. and also if you goin up and down hills turn it off.
Overdrive should be engaged at all times except when towing or the transmission is “hunting” (keeps switching between gears).
