Be extremely careful. Find the way to your destination which has the least traffic, has the fewest cross street thorofares( heavy traffic roads) and the fewest turnoffs. Then you are taking your life in your own hands and less reliant on the actions of drivers.
They pull way up and then you can’t cross the street? Are you riding on the sidewalks? Maybe the problem is where you’re riding. A bicycle is a vehicle.

Takes a certain amount of guts to ride safely on the highway. Bright clothes, secure handling abilities, be predictable. I suggest looking up and learning from “vehicular cycling” – look it up. It’s about acting like a vehicle should. Some get quite obsessive, most of us just ride in a manner than encourages good behavior on the part of motorists.
Bicycle transport takes thought and skill. Alternative routes are certainly worth looking into.
Too much really to go into here. Perhaps you can find someone on the road or via bikeforums.net to help you learn.
1. Helmet. Gloves, eye protection. HI-Viz kit! (Translation: high visibility clothing)
2. You are a vehicle. No sidewalks.
3. Cars are morons. Be very careful, alert and ready to deal with idiots and idiot maneuvers.
4. If there are vehicles at an intersection, you follow the traffic rules. If you happen to be in a rural area, good visibility and don’t see any cars (remember you can hear them, where cars can’t as well), then you can ghost through intersections…. carefully!
Be alert. Be sharp. Be quick. Be prepared. Be confident and ride in a confident manner.
And don’t forget: Have fun!
Get a helmet. That’s your first priority.
When cycling, try to look the drivers in the eye – This means that you’re aware of him, and he’s should be aware of you (“Why is that weirdo on the bike staring at me?”)
Stay as close the the side as possible – Don’t inconvenience driver, but at the same time, don’t put yourself in danger. Pull out slowly and gradually to pass parked cars and watch for side mirrors/car head rests – That way you can see if anyone is in the car, meaning you can avoid being “doored”
