Geo Metro can get close to 50mpg, they are also supposed be pretty reliable considering they are built by Suzuki as the Suzuki Swift, now the Chevy Aveo (Suzuki is Japanese). If you don’t like the idea of a 3cyl car Hondas tend to be pretty efficient, the Honda Civic Hatch can get close to 40mpg, I believe, and the Honda CRX HF can get over 40mpg. Also maybe look into diesel powered VWs.

Honda Civics, Geo Metros.
VW Rabbits and Jettas. VW’s are easier to work on, in my opinion.
Honda CRX and Geo Metros got 40+ mpg.

you could look for an omni or horizon they had the 2.0 and 1.7 engins .they got about 30 miles to the gal. If you do find one they may need work but it’s worth it because gas isn’t going down. all small car with a 2.0 or 2.5 or 2.6 older Alantra has a 2.0 and gets 30 to 33 mile per gallon. WE have one and traded in a big V8. just in time

cant go wrong with toyota corolla or honda civic. i believe the best mpg would have to be the 3 cylinder geo metro. but i don’t know how reliable they are though.
