Hypermiling? What’s your best result?
I have been hypermiling for 2.5 weeks now. I drive a sport sedan 2.5 liter 4cyl. My blended EPA for mileage is 27mpg.
My first attempt I got an average of 30mpg for a tank, and on my second I managed a very nice 34.75mpg. I didnt do any of the crazy stuff like drafting trucks or taking wild turns but I have been coasting to stops, using cruise control at lower speeds (47-50) on the highway ect…
Whats your EPA and what is the best you have done? What techniques have you used?

Comments on Hypermiling? What’s your best result?
I’ve just increased my mileage by 10%
I have a Ford Contour with a stick, and I’ve been turning off the engine and coasting for maybe a 1/2 mile, – and if the light is red up ahead, I wait as long as possible and pop the clutch, – to start the engine again. But sometimes I have to use the starter.
I drive pretty ‘hard’, and the Contour is old (209k). It’s dropped to maybe 23 mpg. I’ve done these ‘tricks’ for the 2 weeks now, – and I just filled up my tank. I’ve recorded 25.62 mpg now. That’s about a 10% improvement.
I’m getting better at figuring out when / where I can do this. Some times I can ‘coast’ for about a minute, – based on hills and such. And then again, my engine is not idleing at a red light for 3 minutes.
I bought a motorcycle and got 63mpg out of the first tank and 61mpg out of the second (I had more fun on the 2nd tank). I only have to do 2000 miles a year with the bike to justify the extra insurance, maintenance and fees.
I’m saving about $10 a day in gas and I’m loving it.
I have a Nissan Versa CVT, and just started. I didn’t have very good efficiency before, and got 29 MPG. (Jackrabbit starts and 70 MPH.)
The first tank I tried hypermiling, I increased my MPG to 33.
I reduced speed to 60 MPH when I could (the trucks have all slowed down to save fuel, so I can usually find a lane that they are driving in and not aggravate anyone)
I use the pulse-and-glide that is mentioned in my link, and otherwise coast when I can. It’s my understanding that with the CVT, I don’t need to change to neutral, and maybe shouldn’t.
I have always tried to drive in the space between bunches of cars on the highway – so this works pretty well for me. When I get in heavy traffic, I just drive with the other cars and forget about it.
I may try the increase in tire pressure next, if it does not set off my tire-inflation warning light. I am looking forward to seeing how much this helps.
