How to make my 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix more fuel efficient?

4

I am just wondering if their is any tweaks i can specifically make for that model of the grand prix. I get about 16 to the mile at best in town and i am by no mean a lead foot. I was thinking of replacing the air filters, but is their anything else i could to to the stock engine that would make it run more smoothly and save me money at the pump? Thanks!

plugs, plug wires, air filter, fuel filter. Check and make sure tires are properly inflated. Run mid grade fuel. Good luck and God Bless.

I manufacture a new exhaust device that really improves efficiency. I have one on a 91 Sunbird, man does it make it scream, and mileage. If you can keep your foot out of it, it improves your mileage in a very large way. I do guaranty a minimum of 10%. The one I tested we tested for power, wow what torque, but the speedo doesnt work so seeing mileage was out, but my girlfriend who drives this car noticed that she doesnt have to gas up near as often.

There is not much you can do to make the car more efficient without spending much more money than you will save. There are a lot of bs things for sale that do not work as they claim.

First the most important is how you drive, try not to use the brakes as much, coast to stop light, obviously not all the way but if a light ahead turn red get of the gas. Try to drive as smooth as possible, most cars get the best fuel economy a few mph after the car shifts into the top gear.

As to what you can do for the car at a reasonable cost:

New air filter – do this every 10-20k miles depending on if you are in a dusty area. Get the standard paper filter because the high performance filter will save some small amount of gas but not to make up the cost.

Keep the tires at the proper inflaition, this should be on a sticker on the driver door sill, if not it is in the manual. Even 2-3 pound of extra pressure will help but more that that you start to wear the tires faster. check this every 1-3 months, a good tire will loose about 1 pound per month.

Get a full tune up if you have not done so, you probably need this anyway. New spark plugs, wire, check the timing ect. This does not improve efficiency so to speak but gives you closer to original efficiency.

Clean the throttle body, basically take this off and get a throtle body cleaner and clean this out, again it returns original efficiency.

Use a fuel system cleaner like Techron once every 5000 miles, I am not sure if this will save more than it costs but it cleans out the fuel system and makes it work better. This should be done one full tank before the oil change. Do this at least once and it will make a big difference after that you can judge you may only want to use this ever 10k miles.

Change you oil when it needs it, use a proper grade of oil, see the owners manual and make sure the oil is labeled energy conserving in the SAE little star symbol.

Finally on the next oil change use Auto-RX this is a not solvent mild cleaner that will clean out the engine internals I assume a ’91 could use this. find it at Auto-rx.com I think, if not do a web search.

That is about all I can think of off the top of my head that will help you and not cost more than it is worth.

Good luck!
