How to coast in Neutral to save gas?

3

I’ve been told that if I’m approaching a yellow light or going downhill that I could just coast with the gearshift in Neutral to save gas… How would I do this? I’ve also been told that the car wouldn’t be in motion at all when it’s in Neutral, that it’s like the equivalence of Park in an automatic transmission..

Wrong, Top Gear mentioned this in their show. When you put your car into neutral the fuel injectors flow fuel to sustain idle, otherwise your engine would die. If you coast in gear and lift off the throttle there in no fuel going to the engine, the engine is turning as its slowing the car, coasting downhill or to a stop. Not to mention the wear and tear on your transmission if you shifted all the time, on an automatic.

That is never a good idea to do that. It is called free wheeling and is very dangerous to do. You do not have control of the car when you do that and by the way, don’t get caught doing it. It is against the law and you will get a hefty fine if you get caught doing it.
