How should you drive (accelerate, break etc..) to save the most fuel?????

7

I have a few questions..I drive a V6 and I don’t know much about the best style of driving to conserve gas.

First of all I’d appreciate some overall tips.

Secondly, when starting the car, just how fast should I accelerate …do you save fuel if you accelerate really slowly? What does the RPM indicator have to do with this…

When you come to a stop at a traffic light..again, should you just decellerate VERY slowly or is it ok to push the break just a little before the traffic light?

Are there any links to tables showing fuel consumption for each speed/acceleration etc?

The best method is to pretend there is a rotten tomato between your accelerator pedal and the bottom of your shoe. You dont want to split the tomato, so you push veeeeeery gently on the pedal.

In other words accelerate lightly and as soon as you realize a stop is approaching, remove your foot from the accelerator.
Coasting in neutral is not necessary and shifting back and forth repeatedly from drive to neutral will put unecessary wear on your tranny. If you are not pressing the accelerator you are not sending any more fuel to the engine whether you are in drive or neutral.

Also….
Replace your spark plugs and wires if the car has over 60K miles.

Remove any excess junk from the trunk and cabin of the car.

Replace worn tires.

Check you tire pressure and maintain it at factory specs.

Change your oil regularly.

Ride your bike, walk or take public transportation when you can.

As far as a table goes, I imagine that because there are so many auto types out there and acceleration styles are such a variable… Im not sure a set of figures would be attainable.

Well, when you are going down hills and you will be stopping shortly after the decline, i would put it in neutral. You actually pick up speed cause unlike drive, your car is not going to try and downshift if you are coasting. BUT BE SURE YOU ARE STOPPED before you put it back in drive.

i have driven like this for years-

when i see a red light ahead i immediately take my foot off the gas and roll to it. if it turns green before i reach it, then i don’t have to use as much gas to accelerate. i don’t understand when others maintain their speed until the last second.
of course you have to adjust this to the situation, but you get the picture.

and you will save gas accelerating slowly.

see a big hill up ahead, begin to accelerate on the level before you reach it.

drive as if you had a very valuable-and breakable-object balanced in the back seat of your car. that is a good guide.

having said this, my driving used to drive my husband crazy. however, i see more and more people driving just like me!

hope this helps-good luck!

the slower you accelerate, the less gas you use. rpm’s are based on the speed that your crankshaft spins. as your rpms increase, the frequency of explosions increase therefore wasting more gas. decelleration doesn’t have anything to do with fuel consumption but hard braking will wear your brakes down faster.
careful with the neutral idea though. My father insists on doing that and he has missed neutral several times and accidentally threw it into reverse and stripped the gears on his tranny. No instant damage, but put about 50k miles worth of wear in one second on tranny. very costly repair.

You could buy a http://www.scangauge.com/ It will tell your mpg as your driving. I try to coast as much as can. and i try to keep the car in 4th gear(wished i had a manual transmission) If your not in your cars highest gear your wasting gas.

The price of energy, in particular fossil fuel, is historically high and seems set to increase. Fuel bills – whether for the home or for the car – take up an ever-increasing proportion of people’s budgets.
