It is not safe at all. You may gain too much speed as you have nothing holding you back (compression) causing you to ride the brakes which could lead to over heating and brake failure.
it’s really a question of safety rather than fuel economy. you would have to have a good grade in order to make a difference on fuel savings and many in a row. i would rather keep it in gear in the event another vehicle swerves in front or behind you in order to avoid a wreck.
