How Much Gasoline Would You Save On A 15 Gallon Tank Of Gas By Not Downshifting When Stopping?
You don’t need to downshift when stopping. If you want to save fuel, keep your eyes on the road up ahead. Shift into neutral and just roll. When it’s time to brake, use the brakes.
When you downshift, you cause your RPM’s to shoot up. That means more fuel is being used. You only need to downshift when you need help stopping. Otherwise, it’s cheaper to replace your brakes than to replace transmission components.

The biggest consumption of fuel is during acceleration – when going from a stop to cruising speed. The harder you step on the throttle, the higher the RPM = higher fuel flow. The secret to good fuel economy is constant engine RPM. Most vehicles get their best engine performance with both speed and power at between 2000 and 2500 RPM regardless of gear selection. Variables will be terrain, traffic and weather. Downshifting will have minimal influence on fuel usage because the brakes are also used to slow the vehicle.
All the best.
it wont save you money it will cost you money….by not downshifting your car is not going to get the right amount of power and torqe to the wheels thus making the car work harder to get going again.
you may save yourself gas but you’ll likely end up costing yourself a transmission.. is it really worth it just to save a few cents on gas?
i think it will cost you more gas by not downshifting. you’re going to make the engine work harder.
