How much gas evaporates in hot sun in unshaded parking?

2

My car is old, white, and I do not drive it every day. It seems to me that I notice the gas meter dropping over time even if I haven’t driven for several weeks.

I say I will save significanty in gasoline this summer if I have enclosed, covered parking. The Other Who Mans the Checkgbook says no way could I be using up Sixty dollars a month for gas. It costs me forty to fill the tank.

Can anyone estimate how much gasoline evaporates from a white car with a good gas cap sitting in the bright sun in ninety degree weather in a semi arid climate?

My next car will be a bike, but until I’m in shape for that…I’d rather not pay for gas that floats up into the atmosphere.

I
OK. My car is twenty years old. It’s an Acura Integra. It still does everything I need a car to do *(obviously I don’t need a car to symbolize my status) and I love it. It’s practically free to insure and register. So far, it’s been worth every penny spent on maintaining it.

So…am I imagining that in the hot sun it evaporates five dollars worth of gas a day? That’s a gallon and a half where I live.

The amount of gasoline that evaporates from a closed gas tank regardless of the weather is so small that it can’t be measured. You could check for fuel tank leaks or fuel line leaks.

The newer vehicles of today have evaporative recovery systems installed in them. If they malfunction, the check engine light comes on to warn the owner. The manufacturer has even put a test port into the system to be used to trouble shoot malfunctions. If you think of it that way, I think the EPA is serious about emission control. If you want to challenge this, just leave your gas cap off when you fill up and you will see that check engine light in no time. Once you start driving the system checks it’s self and if it sees a problem, you get a light.
