how much fuel does Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep’s MDS (shutting down half the cylinders) save?
the official combined figure in the UK for the Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 hemi is 18.3 mpg and the extra urban (highway) is 23.5 mpg. obviously these are horrific, but im wondering if these figures dont account for MDS. i think you would get more than 23mpg when you are effectively running a 3.0 4 cyl engine.
has anyone used MDS or read anything that can tell me how well it works? i mean for all i know it may mean you can do 10mpg more when you are driving slowly or it could be just a little extra 1mpg.
When im choosing between a bmw x5 4,6/4.8, jeep grand cherokee 5.7, porsche cayenne 4.5, vw touareg 4.2 or 5.0, mercedes cl 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 or 5.4, among some others. basically im choosing which big engined car to buy, so taking into account which does the best economy, which i thought might be the jeep due to mds is not stupid.
i see what you mean with increasing throttle to the other cylinders

Well the GCherokee 3.0L Turbo diesel only gets 19mpg so the GC is a pig in the first place.

I think the MDS is not on too often cruising the hwy. Not the most aero thing around.
trying to save fuel with a 5.7 is silly. Yes those figures take MDS into account.
4cyl diesel uses lots of fuel because of the weight it’s hauling, it’d probably use less fuel if it was a 4.0 litre diesel or 6 cylinder 3.0. I’d imagine it’d get more than 23 mpg though driving at 60.
MDS in my opinion is crap anyway, because if you shut down cylinders, you’re losing power. less power = increased throttle to compensate. more throttle = more fuel injected = not really that noticeable.
