How much fuel could we save, and how much pollution could we prevent, by stopping auto racing altogether?

Think about it! Those guys go round…and round…and round…burning up fuel and spewing massive quantities of pollution (exhaust not regulated like regular vehicles, if at all).

Here’s a better idea: Why don’t we try to get some race teams to switch to diesel engines and burn biodiesel? I know Audi’s LMP2 cars are diesel, maybe they could be pioneers. But, I have to admit, nothing will take the place of hearing a Ferrari F1 V8 engine screaming at 19,000 rpm’s!

Stopping racing altogether would do nothing for the regular gasoline reserves. Racing fuel IS NOT regular gasoline. Not only that, but the amount of pollution expelled by racing is insignificant compared to even the strictest emission standards when you take into consideration the shear numbers of idling vehicles every day sitting on interstate highways. It would take NASCAR, the FIA (both WRC and F-1), as well as every other race car in the US that burns racing fuel, over 10 years to create as much pollution as Californians (or substitute any large city name you like here) create IN A SINGLE DAY.

You are exactly right….the exhaust from race cars is not regulated. There’s not enough of them to warrant a mandate on emission regulations in racing.

IF you are truely that concerned about the invironment, why not quit using your gasoline powered push mower (or riding mower), and use a human-powered reel-type mower. Then convince everyone else to do the same.

like i have said before
more fuel is wasted each day in treaffic jams around the world each day
than what nascar and other types of racing does in one year

A better Idea!!!!–FUEL SAVINGS A PLENTY ON THIS ONE—- Shut down the MLB and their 162 games–The NBA and Their 82 games–The NFL–THE NHL– AND The Soccer Leagues + The Arena Football League+ All NCAA Teams in Football , Basketball, Baseball, Hockey,Lacrosse and others– THINK OF ALL THE JET FUEL WE CAN SAVE–THE DIESEL FUEL FOR BUSES WE CAN SAVE–THE GASOLINE WE CAN SAVE FROM ALL THE JETS-BUSES-CARS-LIMOUSINES THE COACHES AND PRO PLAYERS USE—MAN O MAN FUEL SAVING TO THE ULTIMATE!!!!!!!!

Racing uses .00133% of all the fuel burned in the United States per year!
My answer is serious and for the question you asked.
Don’t believe me? 2,880,000 gallons of gasoline is burned in my hometown of St. Louis MO. in one day alone! One city….one day!
One Nascar race on a Sunday burns about 6000 gallons.
Professional Auto Racing is exempt from the clean air act of 1979 just like Airplanes and Trains and Tanks and Earthmovers and Lawn Mowers and Trimmers and the Back-Hoe that dug out your foundation. You know what else is exempt? My 69 Camaro. And it SPEWS Hydrocarbons. Mo. state HC limit at idle is 220 ppm.(pounds per minute) One tailpipe of my dual exhaust max’s out our exhaust sniffer at 5000 ppm’s. Don’t worry, I only drive it about 500 miles per year. But only to preserve the car, not for the enviroment.
I fix automotive emission failures for a living. The rules are the rules. The red flag lies in the millions of cars driving outside your window right now. Not Racing.

To me, it’s like asking how many forests could be saved if we banned Baseball. The answer would be .00133% per year.
(You know…the wooden bats!)
