“How much does a hybrid save on gas compared to a normal car?”
It depends on the hybrid. There are hybrids geared towards fuel efficiency with small engines, and “performance” hybrids with large engines designed to use the electrical assist to boost performance and does not save gas.
Looking at the hybrids geared towards fuel efficiency, the Honda Civic Hybrid would be a good example. The normal 4-cylinder automatic Civic gets 29mpg combined, while the Civic Hybrid gets 42mpg combined: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/2008selemodelf.jsp?year=2008&make=Honda
Whereas if you look at a “performance” hybrid like the Lexus LS600h, it gets 21mpg, which is only 2mpg better than an LS460 at 19mpg. Does not save much gas at all. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/2008selemodelf.jsp?year=2008&make=Lexus
If you are looking to save gas, make sure 1) you are not looking at a “performance” hybrid, and 2) find the one with the biggest Federal Tax Credit rebate to help cover the extra cost of the hybrid. For instance, the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid 2WD comes with a whopping $3000 rebate from Uncle Sam, and saves you fuel at 32mpg compared to a similar V6 Escape 2WD at 25mpg.
Hope this helps.
