I am just curious thank you.

I am no debating between a v6 hybrid or a 4 cyclinder (hoping to save gas $$$)…

thank you

It’s not based on speed, it’s based on the condition of the battery. The charge. As you brake it runs a generator that puts a charge back into the battery. On driving, once the battery reaches a certain level, the gasoline engine starts to run the alternator to keep it charged.

It depends on the hybrid.

For Honda and GM’s BAS hybrids, the car cannot move under electrical power alone. When the car moves, the gasoline engine needs to be on.

For hybrids using the Toyota/Ford drive system, if you are accelerating with a real light foot on level roads, you can get up to 40mph before the gasoline engine kicks in. With moderate throttle the gas engine usually kicks in at around 12mph. Or if you stomp on the throttle to launch from stop, both the gas and electric will be on at the same time.

Hybrids using the Toyota/Ford drive system:

- Toyota Prius, Camry Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid.

- Ford Escape Hybrid and its Mercury and Mazda rebadges.

- Nissan Altima Hybrid.

- Lexus h-series.

For U.S. readers, I recommend the Ford Escape Hybrid– Right now it qualifies for a $3000 Federal Tax Credit, which means it costs the same as a similarly-equipped regular Escape.

correct, it is not the speed factor, more it is a load factor. you get a lot more torque out of the engine than you do out of a motor, but if you combine them through the use of planetary gear sets and wow, you can really move now.
