No problem for neutral at any speed. Coasting is good. Adjusting your speed and coasting so you do not have to use your brakes much is the best way to save gas.
Neutral just disengages the drive gear which is perfectly healthy for your car. You can go fast down hills and slow u hills and substantially increase gas mileage.
the key, as you stated, is slow acceleration up to the posted speed limit. early deceleration in anticipation of a stop is another way to save fuel. keeping unnecessary weight out of the vehicle is key. weight is your enemy. keep your tires properly inflated. less rolling resistance equals more mpg. do you have a tachometer on your instrument panel? keep an eye on it. in drive at 80 mph, let off the accelerator and keep an eye on the tach. what RPM does it show? 1500rpm or 800rpm, somewhere in between. if the engine revvs high when letting off the accelerator, shift into neutral and keep monitoring the tach. if the rpm’s go down significantly in neutral, might not be a bad idea to shift into neutral when coming to a stop. i do the same thing in my ’95 Honda Civic
