Help??? any VW mechanics around?
I have a ’99 v.w. beetle with 95k. Recently the high temp. light came on while on the highway, only drove it 5 minutes to get to an exit, long story short it overheated. The water pump and timing needs to be replaced. The mechanic said there may be an engine problem (diag. test), and it might need a new engine. Doing research, i found out there are common prob.’s with the h2o pump failure & if the engine is a interference type (diesel) im screwed but a non-interference type (gasoline) i have a shot at saving the engine… which it is. Can you explain? thanks in advance

Do you put gasoline in it or the green handle diesel. Oh wait I don’t think they made a diesel Bug…. But they are right, Those water pumps fail as do most it just seems everyone hypes up the foreign cars and in the end they are all buckets of bolts put together differently. Actually at a high speed with some cooling cgoing on you may be OK unless the head gasket popped in which that is a lot cheaper than a new motor.
I’d like to hear what their diagnosis is, If you dent it to the dealer you will be OK with honesty I find VW shops are really fair BUT EPENSIVE
You said you “only drove it 5 minutes to get to an exit” but 5 minutes is a very long time to run an overheated engine. I would be surprised if only the water pump and timing needs repair. I’m afraid your engine very likely has severe damage now. Aluminum alloy engines are especially susceptible to warping when overheated and severe damage to the heads and valves can occur in as little as two minutes after the temp warning light comes on as the cylinder head temperature soars.
