Dumb question … does the fan in your car use gasoline?

12

I know this is a dumb question, but if I’m driving and I have the A/C on in my car, does it matter if I have the fan speed on high or low? I know the A/C uses up a lot of gas and I’m trying not to use it except for when I have to, like if I have my elderly MIL in the car. Does running the fan on low save any gas or not? Thanks!

No, it uses the energy from that big battery.

It does use more gasoline, yet, because it’s running a compressor or pump to move the freon through the system (part of the climate control.) The speed you set the fan at does not matter if it’s a compressor version nor does it matter for the freon versions. The compressor is constantly running at the same speed regardless of fan level.

no but your ac does use more gas as it causes the engine to work harder thereby uing more gas

walter c @ 2:17 am #

YES it Dose….
All the operations of the car are ran from
your Battery and it is charged by the alternator
The alternator is ran by the en gin and these all need gas.

TheGeneral @ 2:26 am #

The belts under the hood run your A C , so yes it takes more power to turn that belt, consuming more gas. That wasnt a dumb question, you just didnt know.

Actually it uses the alternator :) if you disconnect the battery whilst your car is running it will still work.. THats how you test the alternator on a car…

The alternator is like a dynamo on a bike turning some of the kinetic energy into electrical energy..

In essence that kinetic energy comes from the combustion of the gasoline so you aren’t compeltetly wrong.

the fan uses some kind of energy– they used to be mounted directly to the engine and it used the energy of the engine to turn it — your engine uses more gas to turn the crank

In modern cars the fan is turned by a small motor, it’s energy comes from the battery, the battery is charged by the alternator, the altenator is charged by the engine

no matter what, the fan uses energy from the engine, and that energy comes from the fuel– usually gasoline

The fan speed doesn’t make any difference in gas mileage and the AC doesn’t make a whole lot. Years ago it did but the compressors have been improved considerably in the last 10-20 years and don’t put nearly as much strain on the engine as the old ones did.

Not like you are thinking about. Fans, lights, radios etc they all using the same amount of electricity whether set low or high…. the “excess” electricity (if you have the fan set to “Low”) is used up by going through resistors…so for YOUR question – Go ahead- turn it on high… if you want to save on gas a little you can turn the knob/slide that makes it “colder” towards warm a little and the compressor won’t come on as often . However A/C doesn’t use that much gas anyway, I’m guessing but I’ll bet if your car gets 22 miles to a gallon; using the A/C full blast wouldn’t bring it down to 20 miles to a gallon.

vbv @ 5:07 am #

you should only use it when you go above 45mph, but if you go below that you should try to roll down your windows. specially if you want to save gas…. there are many other ways to save gas though like pumping gas early in the morning or late at night, making sure not to ever go below half a tank after that your gas starts to evaporate so you do not want that…..

Mark O @ 5:51 am #

When the Fan runs faster, it drains your battery faster which puts a larger load on your alternator which takes a tiny, tiny, tiny bit more gas. Nothing compared to the gas you use when the Air Conditioning Compressor is under load. It would not even be as much as you would use with say, your headlights on.

Thats not dumb, thats a good one that has been debated before. Even click and clack the tappet brothers on PBS talked about it. The altanater spins all the time anyways so, there is not measurable gas waste with the fan.
The air has a taxing compressor so that does matter.
