Does turning the automatic 4 wheel drive into neutral help me save gas?
I have a 99 jeep grand cherokee. It has 4 wheel drive and the control for it is on the left of the shifter. there is 4 wheel all the time, 4 wheel neutral and 4 wheel low. Will turning the 4 wheel drive into neutral help me get better miles to the gallon?

I’m not sure what you mean, but the neutral setting completely disengages the transmission from the wheels, meaning you don’t go anywhere. Good when you have to tow the jeep, transfer case in neutral, transmission in park.
As far as slipping the transfer case into neutral while you are coasting down a hill to save gas, I wouldn’t recommend it. You probably will not be able to get it back into gear until you stop because there is nothing there to match the engine speed to the wheel speed, ie: it will grind.
If you want to coast, leave the transfer case in 2wd, and put the transmission in neutral. Leave the engine on if you have an automatic or you will burn it up!
With a manual you can turn the engine off, (Key on though!) but be prepared for very stiff brakes and steering, not really recommended for safety reasons of course.
You can try doing a search on “hypermiling” and also the technique “burn and coast”
yes you wont go anywhere.you save lots of gas that way
why would you buy a 4 wheel drive vehicle and expect good gas mileage
