Does the O/D turned off in a car save gas?
I drive a 96 toyota rav4, and on the gearshift there’s a button that turns off O/D, which means overdrive, i’m guessing when it’s off, this saves gas?

Overdrive is not for regular use, it forces your transmission. it should only be used in harsh terrain; snow, off-road, etc.
No it does not save gas. Having it on saves gas. You should always have it on unless you are trying to force your car into a lower gear.
od should never be turned off it saver fuel by giving another gear higher only rerason not to use it would be towing or driving in mountain

overdrive
lol, the first answerer cracks me up. but no, overdrive saves fuel when its on. the only time you should turn it off is when youre trying to force the car into a lower gear, pulling a trailer(in city speeds), or climbing a steep hill. the overdrive gear allows the engine to turn at a lower rpm than the wheels of the car are actually turning. thats why its called overdrive
