Does shifting into Neutral while slowing down save or use gas?

3

Im always trying to discover ways to drive more gas friendly and i was wondering if i shifted from drive up into neutral while slowing down, for instance coming up on an upcoming red light, will it use less gas since its not in gear or will it use more gas from the actual shifting? i have an automatic suv that seems only to get 16-18 miles to the gallon when its supposed to get 18-24. Plus any gas saving techniques that i should know about?

i dont think shifting to neutral is going to do you any good. make sure your tires are properly inflated, new oil in the engine always helps, and ease onto and off of the gas when taking off and stoping

Don’t do it. You will eventually wear out your torque converter. If you want to save on gas, change oil and oil filter about every 5,000 miles and spark plugs about every 8,000 miles.

Not with an automatic, its not doing any good but causing wear, just make sure your tires are properly inflated to what the sticker says inside your driver door.Change your air filter when bad , instead of shifting just coast to a red light tune up about every 70,000 miles, if you can get your injectors seriviced/flushed at your vechicles dealership avoid the cheap stp additives for that.Biggest savings are in tire pressure/air filter/and tune up.
