Does Putting Your Car In Neutral And Coasting Down Big Hills Save Gas?

5

I saw on the news about a guy that is real big into hypermiling and he said that he puts his car in neutral on big hills, and such. But, I don’t understand how that saves gas, can anyone explain that to me?

Yes, I saw that, too. And I have tried it myself, but it doesn’t save hardly any gas UNLESS you do all the other hypermiling things as well. With hypermiling, it’s all or nothing.

It will save gas, it even saves gas if you leave it and drive and just don’t give it any throttle. Most of these hypermilers are actually turning off the car when they do this, but they will be the first ones to tell you that doing so is very dangerous and not advisable. When you do any of those, you save gas because the engine is not working as hard or at all. In an automatic, simply taking your foot off the gas should suffice (you may not be able to shift into neutral while moving in some cars) and putting your foot on the clutch will do the same thing in a manual trans. It may not save that much gas, but it adds up.

This is a foolish thing to do. With the car in gear, you have the aid of the engine braking for you. You could just find a problem in the road that might require the use of acceleration.
I can assure you that with the car in neutral you wouldn’t have the time to find a gear, make the needed changes, and keep from getting into the problem yourself. //True story// I read that a couple of state legislature persons were trying out the same thing. Then one said “how about just shutting the engine off?” They did, the driver then tried to make a small direction correction and locked the steering. Needless to say, the wreck wasn’t nice at all.

Putting your car in neutral might save a tiny bit of gas, but you would never notice. It basically just disengages the transmission from the engine. The engine is still running, and thus still consuming fuel. It’s just like pulling in the clutch and holding it there if you drive standard transmission.
