does leaving diesel trucks idling save gas?

big debate in my family right now. My dad leaves his 2005 F250 Ford Diesel truck idling. . . he argues that it saves gas. is that just a myth? or does it really save gas?

If he leaves it idling for more than 30 seconds, then he is wasting diesel fuel.

well it wont use gas no matter what…

but it will burn diesel idling, but none stopped….
start up will use about the same amount of fuel as 1-2 seconds of idling

people used to leave big diesels running in the past because when they are hot they are nearly impossible to start, and they take a LONG time to cool down

NOT AT ALL, only if you plan to get back in it with in a minute or 2, it’s using fuel no matter what when it running

Not really….but cranking a diesel is the hardest part on a diesel engine. If I’m ever going to be somewhere for no longer than 15min….I let it idle. I mean its only idling at about 5-600 rpm.
