Does it save gas if you shift your car into neutral while you’re in motion?
Such as shifting into neutral when you see a light in the distance turn red.

Comments on Does it save gas if you shift your car into neutral while you’re in motion?
i think it does i sometimes do that, also just coasting to the light not pressing the gas all the way up to the light helps
No point in going in to neutral, as others suggest, just take your foot of the gas. The possible saving would be offset by the increased use of brakes and the need to replace them more regularly.
not really, because of the short distance, the engine is still using gas ,also it is dangerous, because your brakes are working twice as hard to slow you down when in neutral,
Agree with most, especially with the comments on braking.
I think the safest option is to shift down gears as you slow down – it has saved me, looking into my mirror watching the vehicle behind about to run up my …….!!!
At least I was in the correct gear to accelerate away to prevent this moron ploughing into me.
Cheers
You get almost the same fuel savings just taking your foot completely off the gas pedal and it is much safer (no delay to shift into gear if you need to suddenly accelerate).
Shifting into neutral is also a savings on engine wear-and-tear. Brake pads/shoes are much cheaper to replace than engine internals. Regardless, safety and car control mean I rarely coast in neutral.
