Determine gasoline mileage periodically. Declining mileage can be an early indicator of mechanical problems or a need for servicing.

No….no matter what you do to your car, it will never save gas !! unless you don’t drive it.
By covering the bed on the truck you will save some gas. It reduces drag which in turn puts less work on the motor. Your savings will not be much but you will see a gain. Keep in mind that you can only do so much before your no longer gaining mileage. A V8 will consume the same amount of fuel no matter what you do. Its 8 hungry mouths that want the fuel. By changing the bed or removing it completely you might get a 5% increase in mileage.
Even if it does, the near $1000 you’re going to shell out for a new one will take a LONG time to recover. Check with your local dealer, they think they are made of gold with the prices they want!!!
Don’t buy one to save gas if you need lockable storage then buy one, but gas savings you will not recover the cost of it.
