Does driving into corners save fuel?

5

Not literally driving into them but keeping tight around bends – would you Save fuel by keeping tight around bends because you would be covering less distance? This really applies to the same long journeys that are done everyday…

No. You should watch how race car drivers take corners. They take them outside in and back out. They don’t have to slow down as much and that is what saves energy.

This is one of hundreds of hypermiling techniques that will improve fuel mileage. Not all of them would be considered safe practices. This one for example would only be safe if you stayed in your lane of traffic and most dangerous if you crossed into oncoming traffic.

Larry is right, race car drivers take corners wider, so they don’t have to slow down as much, which does save energy. It saves energy because they don’t have to accelerate as much to get back up to speed. However, they do it because it’s faster, not because it saves them energy.

The reason that freeway driving gets better gas mileage is that you don’t waste energy braking, then accelerating. The more you maintain a constant speed, the better. And the best speed to maintain is around 40 mph, but varies some with different cars because of engine efficiency and gearing, and aerodynamic efficiency.

Driving a straight line conserves energy. This is why race car drivers “cut the corners” from one curve to the next to form the straightest line possible.

The best way to conserve fuel is to start your engine, slowly accelerate to about 30 MPH, then turn off your engine and coast to a stop. Repeat. Of course you would only do this if you were 60 miles from town and only had one gallon of gas, but it’s something to remember.
