does depressing pedal on automatic while shifting saves gas?
on a manual, normally, i would release pedal, shift, press pedal.
on an automatic, would releasing pedal while it shift save some gas?
i thought that the 1 second it takes for the auto to downshift, it would not go any faster if i kept my foot on the pedal. thus it saves me gas if i let go of the pedal while it shifts. is this right?

There is no clutch on an automatic.
obviously anytime u release the gas pedal you are saving gas.
the first guy is just making himself look stupid by answering like that.
Anytime you can lessen the depression on your gas pedal, you are pretty much not going to burn as much as if you kept it pressed down. Not much help but hope it answers your question.
No, because on an automatic, it would shift up only if you were stepping on the gas. If you let go of the gas pedal right when it shifts, it may end up down-shifting again to the lower gear.
There is obviously no clutch in an automatic. Of course not pressing down on the gas would save petrol. The reason that manual can be more fuel-efficent than an automatic is totally based on the driver and how the shift gears because the automatic will shift gears when it reaches a specific RPM will manually shifting can reduce the time therefore petrol consumption during each shift. Manual cars can waste a lot of petrol if you shift at the wrong time which can over-rev your engine burning it out while wasting a lot of money on petrol.
not really. its better to keep a steady foot because if you release and then depress again, your using gas to bring the rpms up.
I agree with unplugged.
Jsut keep the pedal steady, the steadier the better, this allows the vehicles computer to monitor and adjust accordingly. The longer you keep it steady the computer can tell to inject less and less fuel.
Releasing the pedal will cause the flywheel to lose momentum, than you got to build that momentum back up using more gas.
You let off the throttle to shift a stick shift, so that the speed of the engine is synchronized to the speed of the gear you are shifting to. It has nothing to do with saving fuel.
Once in drive an automatic transmission will only shift when the engine rpms are at a safe speed for the transmission to shift without damage to the vehicle, so it makes no difference if you have your foot on the throttle or not.
